This lecture explores the heart of communication: the capacity to truly listen without interference. It looks beyond words to examine how tone and intent shape whether a message can be heard at all. When listening is “jammed” by inner reactions, judgment, or the need to be right, communication breaks down even when the content is accurate.
Drawing on everyday examples from family life, education, and community settings, Dennis shares how tone carries meaning beneath language. He shows why blame-based “you-messages” shut down understanding, and how trust is built when speakers learn to match tone, slow the conversation, and take responsibility for misunderstanding rather than assigning fault.
Through simple, practical exercises, participants are introduced to tools for transforming conflict into dialogue. By learning how to listen for intent, own confusion, and reset tone when tensions rise, Dennis offers a pathway toward more honest, humane communication and healthier relationships within families, workplaces, and communities.
