Three historical amplifications — machines, media, and now AI — have each offered to do something for us that we used to have to do ourselves. Every time, something is gained. Every time, opportunities for growth are removed.

In this keynote for the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education’s first Online Symposium, Ben Klocek traces how mechanization, electronic media, and artificial intelligence have each amplified the human will, heart, and head and asks what happens to a growing child when the resistance that used to build strength in each of those capacities disappears.

Drawing on Rudolf Steiner’s threefold picture of the developing human being, Klocek argues that the real cost of these amplifications is a shrinking tolerance for discomfort, which is exactly what children need to build patience, process emotion, and learn to think for themselves. He offers a working frame for educators: where is a student in too much flow, and where are they stuck in resistance? He closes with practical classroom strategies for rebuilding that tolerance by sequencing body, heart, and head so students actually arrive ready to learn.

After the keynote, four panelists carry the conversation into breakout rooms and a closing Q&A, each grounded in their own work with children, families, and schools.
